The Sacramento River travels approximately 400 miles from source to sea and provides water for 25 million people, power for over 4 million homes, habitat for hundreds of wildlife species, and irrigates more than 2 million acres of arid land before reaching the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. The river encounters constant tension between diverse interests, such as water supply, fish habitat, flood control, hydropower, recreation, and the impact on downstream ecosystems.

In March of this year, a crew of three women will launch packrafts at the headwaters of the Sacramento River and trace its journey to the Pacific Ocean. On an open-minded, fun and educational journey, they aim to deepen their personal connections to the river and learn more about the diverse stakeholders who share an interest in California’s longest river.

Siskiyou Land Trust is delighted to host this presentation!  Ari, Alyssa and Jamie will cover the vision and logistics of their exciting endeavor. You’ll learn more about how this trip came to be, what the crew hopes to accomplish on their journey, and an overview of the stakeholders and complex issues that the Sacramento River faces on its more than 400 mile journey from source to sea.

The crew includes Mt. Shasta locals Alyssa Winkelman and Arianna Kosel, as well as their friend Jamie Trapp. Their mission is to develop and film an inspirational and relatable story that raises awareness and empowers the public to take action on key environmental and social issues surrounding the Sacramento River and other hard-working rivers world wide.
