On April 23, the Siskiyou Land Trust teamed up with expert Tom Landis from Southern Oregon Monarchs Advocates to present an online webinar about Monarch butterflies and the migration of Monarchs through our region.

This was our first virtual event at Siskiyou Land Trust.  Aside from some Internet speed issues, we are pleased with the Zoom webinar format.  If you missed the live presentation, or want to view Tom’s wonderful slides again, here’s the recorded presentation from our Youtube channel.

Recent field studies reveal that the west coast Monarch population is in critical need of our support.  In this 1 hour presentation, we’ll explore creating Monarch Waystations to provide habitat and support for these amazing butterflies.

Siskiyou Land Trust has recently initiated plans with USFS to build a Monarch Waystation in Sisson Meadow, our community open space in Mt. Shasta, CA.  We will share our progress with you, as well as information on how we can all promote waystations and planting native species that the Monarchs need.

The original program concluded with a showing of the epic natural history film, Flight of the Butterflies. This award winning 45 minute movie that is usually shown in the IMAX theater space of large museums and galleries. Watch the movie trailer at http://www.flightofthebutterflies.com.  The film producer  generously donated the viewing of this film in support of environmental education and Monarch waystations!

Our guest presenter, Tom Landis has worked for 30 years as a forester and nursery specialist for the Forest Service. He now runs Native Plant Nursery Consulting in Medford, OR and is a member of the Southern Oregon Monarch Advocates.

Tom’s expertise is focused on how we can help the western monarch butterfly by creating habitat with Monarch Waystations, planting native milkweed and nectar species, and raising monarchs. Click here for more about Landis.
